About Our Project

We, the creators of the COVID-19 Pandemic Experience at Rowan University, are the first digital history class at Rowan University. Our class acted as the pioneers for the digital humanities at Rowan, paving the way for future faculty and students. The class had only 12 students, 9 undergraduates, and 3 graduates, but we each came with our own experiences and knowledge that added greatly to the diversity of the project. For those who do not know about Rowan University, it is a public research university that is based in Glassboro, New Jersey. It was originally founded in 1923 as a teacher preparation college, but in just a little under 100 years Rowan has come to be considered one of the top public universities in the North and holds over 19,000 students, who offer a plethora of programs to choose from. This project was created during the Fall Semester of 2022. Throughout the fall semester, documents have been collected and edited that were created or produced during the COVID-19 Pandemic. COVID-19, otherwise known as the coronavirus, was discovered first in December of 2019 in Wuhan, China. This virus spread rapidly during the start of 2020 until it eventually ended up being declared a global pandemic in March 2020. In that same month, lockdowns began across the United States. These lockdowns meant that many businesses were shut down, schools for all ages were closed, and people were not prohibited from leaving their homes except for special circumstances, such as being essential workers. This meant that everything that was usually done in person, like work and learning, was done at home remotely. Throughout 2020 lockdown restrictions were eased, but many restrictions such as mask mandates, business and school openings, quarantine restrictions, and limited gathering sizes remained. These restrictions underwent many transformations in 2021, it was not until 2022 that many of them were fully eliminated across almost all of the United States. It is in the fall of 2022, with this contextual knowledge, that this project was created.
